Fifth New Jersey Independent
South Asian Cine Fest (NJISACF), 2011,
produced
by the Asian
American Film and Theater Project,
will showcase independent
films by or
about South Asian women from all over the world that
challenge the stereotypical and traditional portrayal of South Asian women in
mainstream commercial cinema. The two day-long festival will introduce new and
established independent women film artists, from South
Asia and the South Asian Diaspora. The festival will
also feature filmmaker Q&As and panel discussions with participation from
scholars and academics from a variety of disciplines.
Jury
and Audience Choice Prizes will be awarded for excellence in various
categories.
Filmmakers
are invited to submit films of all genres, formats and length.

Samarth Nagarkar is a Hindustani classical vocalist from Bangalore, currently
based in New York. He is a disciple of Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar and Pt. Dinkar
Kaikini and former Grade A scholar at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy. For

description: The presentation begins with a Sandhiprakash Raga (a raag
that represents and is sung at the meeting of light with darkness or twilight-
dawn or, as in this case, dusk). The concert will incorporate renditions in the
classic gayakis of Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur gharanas. A variety of compositions
like Tarana, Trivat, Tapp-Khayal, and time permitting, some lighter classical
traditional music such as thumri, dadra, tappa and/or bhajan will also be
presented. A showcase of the rich repertoire that Indian classical musical
tradition has built up over several centuries.

grandson is based in the US. In spite of his countless efforts to convince her,
she never goes to the US to visit him. After a drastic incident, she however
decides to go. What follows is a comedy drama complete with emotions.

of 14artists from India. This drama portrays the life and accomplishments
of the great Jain scholar Virchand Raghavji Gandhi. It features 13 different
background scenes. This famous drama has been staged at a number of cities in
India, a total of over 180 shows so far. The play was performed
in Hindi at the Jain convention,
